Legal Literacy and Formation of Mahila Panchayats

Target Group:
Women, especially those who are victims of domestic violence


Objectives:

  • To build the capacity of grassroots women to become legally aware, gender sensitive, and non-judgmental and listen with empathy to victims of domestic violence
  • To provide a forum for conflict resolution to resolve family disputes and enable women to assert themselves and live with dignity & self esteem
  • To train paralegal workers to counsel women to know their legal rights, to take decisions , to act to get out of violent situations when necessary & when conflict is not resolved, and to handle caseload


Project Brief:
The Mahila Panchayats offer a community -level, women-directed redressal mechanism that provides counseling, arbitration and support on legal issues to grassroots women. When possible, disputes are resolved at the Panchayat-level. If necessary, Mahila Panchayats provide referrals and support in contacting the police, attorneys and/or the courts. This program offers crucial support and advocacy directly from her community peers to women experiencing injustice
