Water & Sanitation
Appalling situations of housing, sanitation, civic amenities, education, lack access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities and health abound in urban slum clusters of North Delhi have encouraged CSI in its efforts to increase access and awareness of maternal/new born/childhood health and nutrition services. It strives to improve the access, awareness and practice of safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and hygiene behaviours. And strengthens existing government and community-based systems to deliver quality maternal, new born and child health, nutrition and WASH services. CSI also ensures early detection, registration of pregnancy, proper antenatal check-up, institutional delivery, post natal care & check-up, growth monitoring and timely immunization of children.
CSI has formed Community Cohesive Action Groups (CCAGs) and Slum Health and Sanitation Teams (SHASTs) groups in community to enhance awareness and acceptance of positive MNCHN practices among communities.
• Building confidence of CMG,CCAG and SHAST group by conducting sessions on issue of MNCHN and WASH, writing applications to govt. officials, filing RTIs and understanding the hierarchy of MCD, DDA, DUSIB etc
• CSI enhanced the knowledge and skills of CHV and FLHV (ASHA/ANM/AWW) on maternal and child health issues
• Strengthening School Health Sanitation Club and Water User Group for hygiene promotions on water and sanitations ensuring safe drinking water, usages of DANDIDAR LOTA, proper usages of toilets, hand washing practices at critical and required times and water purification methods
• Generated awareness and behaviour change by carrying out community based campaigns and rallies, street plays surrounding health, water and sanitation issues
• Improved level of information amongst school going children and adolescents by ornaginsing drawing Competition with School and Slum Children, comic Workshop with SHAST group on Water and Sanitation
• Encouraging community involvement in converting one Community toilet complex (CTC) into Community Managed Toilet (CMT), constructing 9 water stand point in the community and motivating the community to monitor the govt. facilities, have organized “training of community groups”
• Enhancing knowledge of pregnant women and mothers on care during pregnancy, nutrition and care of new born and malnourished children, Institutional Delivery, Immunization and Open Defecation
• Building capacities of 38 NGO staff, 29 Govt. District Level Officials (S.I, M.I, J.E, A.E, CDPO,CDMO, Principal), 29 Govt. Slum Level staff(A.S.I, A.M.I, Sweepers), 23 Govt. School Teacher, 43 Community Level Health worker (ASHA/ AWW/ ANM) on water & sanitation issues
Community Solves its own issues …
A small family in a resettlement colony was living under an electric pole, which had bent more over the house in due course of time. Since last three years, the residents of that jhuggi and entire cluster had been complaining to the govt. officials but nothing was happening. Soon after CSI’s intervention in that area, community members were mobilized to form community cohesive action group, and take up issue of this bent electric pole through proper channel.
CSI team trained the CCAG members, how to properly file a complaint and in writing followed by taking a receiving on the copy of complaint for proof. It was also emphasized that it is more effective and impactful when people approach govt. officials in a group which shows the unity of the community. Thus CCAG members were provided training on writing a complaint letter and the process of submitting the application. CCAG members were also provided information on the organizational structure of key govt. departments such as sanitation, electricity, education, malaria, health etc.
Thus CCAG members of the Shahbad dairy area wrote the complaint and went to NDPL office at Sector 16, Rohini and submitted their complaint .They also submitted a copy of letter to Ward Counselor of ward no. 26 and sought his support. When group members approached the counselor, he immediately made a phone call to the area junior engineer and asked him to resolve the issue at the earliest. The officials of NDPL changed the electric pole within 10 days and got the signed verification from group members.
The CCAG members thus realized the power of written complaint to the right official and are now feeling empowered & motivated to resolve other similar issues of the community.
